I have posted over 3,000 times to my instagram story in the past 10 years
Of this approximately ~1,600 could be classified as “Collage”
Looking back in my archives, it did not really start anywhere particularly. With each new feature added to the editor my compositions grew increasingly complex.
When you post a story to instagram it is available for exactly 1,440 minutes to be viewed online. Your profile icon gets a purple glowing ring annoited upon it and is pushed to the front of the queue of your followers devices. That is if your followers are there at that moment, if they interact enough with your content for instagram to deciede its worth serving, that is if you are not buried before everyone else.
There is liberation in making something that doesnt last forever.
When Zuccerberg unveiled the story feature to instagram in 2016 most of the response online was that he was continuing his crusade to clone all of Snapchats features after Evan Speigel snubbed his 4 billion dollar offer. The truth is that instagram was starting to phase out chronological order in your feed, once the core of the app, now your regular feed was slowly changing to reflect a Black box algorithm.
In essense giving users Stories was letting them have some ability to showcase to your followers a chronological real time access to what is going on, with the caveat of lasting 24hrs.
I don’t plan out my collages ever.
I don’t seek the images or videos I use.
It is a chronological story of myself.
Though of my online journey.
I collect content.
Images, Animations, Sounds, videos.
Terabytes and Terabytes of it.
When I browse the internet I often am afraid.
Afraid that I will forget what I just saw.
So I save it.
To my desktop.
To the cloud.
To my phone.
When I make each collage, I mesh the content I have saved over the past X days. Mix it with images I made or things I generated. Sometimes to create an aesthetic balance, sometimes a narrative, sometimes a journal, sometimes just a dump.
Everything is done inside the instagram story editor, no other programs are used, I push it to the limit. I break it all the time, it was never designed to do this.
Yeah it is my story to tell.
And for 24hrs.
Everyone can bear witness to my layout.
And forget it all over again.
Above are a small selection of the thousands I have made.
Perhaps one day I will share all of them.
